01Method

  1. 1

Heat the oven to 350°F (175°C).

  2. 2

Slice the loaf in half lengthwise. Combine the softened butter, minced garlic, and chopped parsley in a bowl, then spread the mixture evenly across both cut surfaces.

  3. 3

Transfer the bread halves to a sturdy baking pan and bake at 350°F (175°C) for 10 minutes.

  4. 4

Take the pan out of the oven. If desired, scatter grated Parmesan over the bread. Move the pan to the highest oven rack and broil on high for 2–3 minutes, until the edges turn golden and the cheese (if used) bubbles. Keep a close eye on the bread — it can burn quickly.

  5. 5

Allow to cool for a minute, then transfer to a cutting board and use a bread knife to cut into 1-inch slices. Serve right away.

  6. 6

For soft garlic bread: heat the oven to 350°F (175°C).

  7. 7

Prepare the butter, garlic, and parsley mixture as described above.

  8. 8

Cut 1-inch slices into the loaf without cutting all the way through — stop just before the bottom crust. Tuck a spoonful or two of the butter mixture into each gap, or every other gap if preferred.

  9. 9

Wrap the loaf tightly in aluminum foil and bake at 350°F (175°C) for 15 minutes, until the butter has melted through and the bread is warmed.

  10. 10

Unwrap and serve the loaf nestled in a clean kitchen towel, letting guests tear off their own slices.
