- 1
Heat the oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- 2
Combine the flour, brown sugar, baking powder, cinnamon, and salt in a bowl, whisking until evenly mixed. Using a box grater, shred the frozen butter directly into the flour mixture and work it in with a fork until the texture resembles coarse crumbs. In a separate small bowl, beat the buttermilk and egg together, then pour over the flour-butter mixture. Stir with a spatula until just barely combined, then fold in the apple pieces, pressing the dough together with your hands if needed. Avoid overworking the dough.
- 3
Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface, split it into two equal portions, and shape each into a 5-inch round disc. Using a bench scraper or lightly greased knife, cut each disc into 6 triangular wedges. Arrange the wedges on the prepared baking sheet with space between them.
- 4
Bake until the scones are lightly golden, approximately 15 minutes. Transfer to a wire rack and allow to cool for about 30 minutes.
- 5
In a small bowl, stir together the confectioners' sugar, maple syrup, and cinnamon until smooth and lump-free. Drizzle the glaze over the cooled scones and finish with a sprinkle of grated nutmeg.
