Why our shopping list is sorted by aisle, not by recipe

A shopping list grouped by recipe reads well at home and falls apart in the store: you visit the produce aisle four times and the dairy fridge twice. YouEat merges every recipe's ingredients first, then sorts the result the way a supermarket is laid out.

01

Merge, then sort

Quantities of the same ingredient are combined across the whole week — 200 g of rice here, 150 g there becomes one line of 350 g. Only then do we group by aisle, so the list walks the store in one pass.

  • One pass. Produce, dry goods, dairy, frozen — in the order you meet them.
  • No duplicates. Merged quantities mean you never buy the same thing twice.
  • Live sync. Swap a meal and the list recalculates before you reach the till.
