01Method

  1. 1

Heat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and lightly flour an 8-inch square baking pan.

  2. 2

Break the baking chocolate into chunks and place them in the top of a double boiler or a heatproof bowl.

  3. 3

Add the butter to the chocolate pieces and set over gently simmering water. Stir occasionally until completely melted and smooth, then remove from the heat and allow to cool to room temperature.

  4. 4

Mix the brown sugar and vanilla into the cooled chocolate mixture, then add the eggs and stir until thoroughly combined.

  5. 5

Sift together the flour, salt, and baking powder into a separate bowl, then gradually fold into the chocolate mixture until just blended. Fold in the chocolate chips and spread the batter evenly into the prepared pan.

  6. 6

Bake until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean, 25 to 30 minutes. Transfer to a rack and let cool for at least 10 minutes before slicing into squares.
